History
The Immanuel College Old Scholars Soccer Club emerged from humble beginnings.
Its origins can be traced back to a casual ‘kick-around’ among mates
and old school friends in the city parklands one Sunday morning in Autumn 2004.
At the time, these trailblazers never dreamed they would one day form the board
that formed the idea that formed the club – the Immanuel Doves.
While the skills displayed at those weekly Sunday gatherings were basic at best,
what was obvious was a burgeoning passion for the round ball.
Gradually, numbers began to swell as news of the so-called “soccevolution”
spread throughout the Immanuel Old Scholar Community.
Scratch matches were organised with football nomads from across the city.
But it was the history-making internal match later in 2004 between the two Old
Scholar factions that married the ‘yin and yang’ of what became
ICOSSC.
The two factions that took to the pitch that day were The Guild – recognised
as the elder statesmen of the Immanuel Old Scholar Soccer fraternity –
and the promising younger stable of past students known as The Jury.
As this history is the personal testimony of a Guild member and survivor of
what later became known as the Parkland Massacre, the score shall not be repeated.
However, at the final siren all who witnessed the skill, determination and sportsmanship
displayed on the pitch agreed that to harness these two soccer powerhouses was
to achieve something far greater than the sum of its parts.
Brother joined brother, mate joined mate and the nucleus of the Doves was formed.
The rest – including the preparation of the hefty legal document known
as the Dove Constitution, the staging of the inaugural AGM and the final vote
passed by the Collegiate League that made our club’s entry official in
2005 – is, shall we say, history….
Dove Song
From little things, big things
grow
(Song by Paul Kelly / Lyrics by Ryan McKee)
Gather round people, I'll tell you a story
A two year long story of passion and pride
Two great teams, the Guild and the Jury
Opposite men, on opposite sides
The Guild were the elders with experience and guile
One thing's for certain, they'd seen it all before
The Jury were younger, but their drive and endeavour
Led them to win, 5-2 was the score.
From little things, big things grow
From little things, big things grow.
Yeah the Guild roared, and the Guild thundered
All over town, their defeat had been seen
Finally they said, there's only one thing for this
Those Jury boys, we need them on our team
So the Guild and the Jury, sat down as one
And together their allegiance was sworn
And with the good backing of Immanuel
Against all odds, The Doves were born
From little things, big things grow
From little things, big things grow
So was created, a unique kind of club
Round was their table, and fun was their creed
The good humour of the boys in white and blue
Made the tales of the Dove, a hell of read
The night of nights arrived, and as was foreseen
McCouaig younger took the Big Bird out the door
Jokes were told, and songs were sung
Spirdo got the boot, and Sparrow hit the floor
From little things, big things grow
From little things, big things grow
Season 2, and Jan's troops were looking strong
Some old Doves had left, but some new blood had sprung
These boys could play, and the results began to come
And over and over, 'All You Need is Dove' was sung
Well that was the story, of the Guild and the Jury
But this is the story of something much more
How when a team of friends comes together
A simple dove can learn how to soar
From little things, big things grow
From little things, big things grow
From little things, big things grow
From little things, big things grow
